Great Lakes SCRIP Program

What is SCRIP?

SCRIP is a term used to mean “substitute money’. When scrip certificates (also known as scrips) are purchased, they are negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. Scrips are issued by national and local retailers. A wide variety of retailers participate (e.g. Amazon, Target, Starbucks, Albertsons). Scrips are purchased at face value. So, if you purchase a $5.00 scrip for Starbucks, you receive a $5.00 cash card (scrip) for Starbucks.

How does SCRIP help the program?

Scrips are purchased in advance by participating families. When our coordinator orders the scrips from the Great Lakes Scrip Center, we are able to purchase the scrips at a discount. The difference between the full face value of the scrip certificate and the discounted purchase price is the rebate/revenue to our organizations. Rebate values vary from retailer to retailer. A list of current retailers and discount rates can be browsed by category here.

 How does the process work?

You, your family, your friends, etc. will review the list of retailers offering scrips certificates. You will fill in an on-line order form (or fill in a offline scrip form) to purchase scrips in fixed denomination amounts from your chosen retailer. Purchases are usually offered in denominations of $5, $10, $25, $50 or $100. You’ll submit a check (made out to DHHS IMF) for the total amount of scrips being purchased prior to the order deadline. Once your scrip coordinator submits the group order, it will take about a week to receive the scrips and distribute them.

Our scrip program is sponsored through Great Lakes Scrip Center and coordinated by a SOCSA parent volunteer. There are various other scrip organizations. Great Lakes Scrip Center teams with to capture individual orders on-line for each enrolled organization.

Which retailers participate in the program?

A list of participating retailers can be found on-line. You can download a printer friendly version of the list of participating retailers in a summarized 3-column list PDF format. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the PDF formatted file. Contributions (also referred-to as ‘discounts’) back to the program vary from 2% to 17%, depending on the retailer. The average contribution/discount is around 5%. Remember – you don’t pay anything extra for SCRIP … and all contributions/discounts directly benefit the programs supported by the DHHS Instrumental Music & SOCSA Foundations.

Please Note : Some scrip cards are just like gift cards and come with expiration dates. A majority of the cards do NOT have expiration dates. will warn you about constraints prior to placing your order for that card. For example, the VISA debit cards come with some rules like if not used within the first ‘x’ months, VISA will start debiting your card ‘y’ amount. You accept all liability when you place your order.
